The nose is one of the most prominent features of the face and it can play a key role in the formation of body image and self-esteem. Nasal surgery is one of the most complex plastic surgery procedures and it can be one of the most rewarding. It involves reshaping the nasal cartilage, bones and skin. Whether you’ve had nasal trauma in the past or desire an aesthetic improvement, everyone has a different set of desires and expectations and it is essential for your doctor to understand what your concerns are and what you want before undergoing nasal surgery. The goal is to create a nose that is harmonious with the face. Most friends and acquaintances shouldn’t be able pin point the change but may ask what’s different.

Best Candidates

Rhinoplasty or a nose job can improve ones appearance and self esteem at any age. However, children and young adolescents should wait until facial growth is complete prior to undergoing nasal surgery. This is typically around 14 years for females and 16 years for males.

Ideal candidates are in good general health and have any of the follow issues:

  • A dorsal hump on the nasal bridge
  • A large nose
  • A wide alar base
  • A drooping nasal tip
  • A bulbous or wide nasal tip
  • A crooked or twisted nose
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose (See Septoplasty)

Rhinoplasty can be performed with minimal incision inside the nose (Closed Rhinoplasty) or more commonly utilizing an additional small incision through the columella (Open Rhinoplasty). The technique chosen depends on what your individual needs are and how they can best be accomplished.

Nasal surgery is typically an outpatient procedure and performed in an accredited surgical facility with the assistances of an anesthesiologist. The procedure may take between 3-4 hours. Nasal packing is rarely used but thin nasal Splints and a cast will be in place for 7 days. It typically is not that painful but you may have a dull aching sensation for the first few days. Head elevation and ice are helpful to reduce swelling and bruising.

The majority of the swelling will be resolved by 10-14 days but it may take 6-9 months for the final nasal contour to be appreciated as the healing process occurs.
