Postpartum Rejuvenation (Mommy Makeover)
The joys and rewards of motherhood often leave their mark on a mother’s body. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall muscles, creates skin laxity and stretch marks. Similarly, the breast enlarge for breast feeding and then atrophy or loose volume afterward. A mommy makeover typically involves an abdominoplasty and breast lift with or without augmentation. Abdominoplasty or a Tummy Tuck is a procedure that removes excess lower abdominal fat and skin to provide a tighter and more aesthetically pleasing contour. Pregnancy can cause rectus diastasis, where the six pack muscles are stretched apart and it creates a looser abdominal wall. Repairing the diastasis will stabilize the abdominal wall and tighten the abdominal wall.
The incisions are frequently a common source of concern for patients. Dr. Butz is aware of this and only makes the scar as long as necessary. There are mini or short scar abdominoplasty when there is less abdominal tissue that needs to be removed. Most important, Dr. Butz carefully closes the scar and hides it in the underwear line. Liposuction is commonly combined with the abdominoplasty to provide circumferential contour improvements.
Ideal candidates are healthy men and women who desire improvements in the following:
- Breast ptosis and volume loss
- Excess abdominal skin and fat
- Abdominal wall diastasis related to pregnancy
- Stretch Marks
Preparing for your Procedure
As with any procedure, you should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your Doctor prior to stopping medications.
The abdominoplasty incision is determined by Dr. Butz based on the amount of excess skin and fat tissue. He will make sure it is with in your underwear line to ensure it is well hidden. Dr. Butz will discuss the details of the procedure with you during the consultation. Liposuction is used to address the flanks to ensure the abdominal contour is properly sculpted.
There are several different techniques and options available for breast augmentation or ptosis correction. Dr. Butz will discuss your goals and preferences and help you decide what the best option is for you.
The procedure is performed in an accredited surgery center with the assistance of an anesthesiologist. An overnight stay is an option and sometimes a good idea. A compression garment will be in place for the first 6-8 weeks after the procedure. Dr. Butz may leave two drains in place to help reduce the amount of swelling. Dr. Butz does perform “drainless” abdominoplasty in select patients. You may have some numbness, tightness and pulling of the abdomen for several weeks to months. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. If you have small children at home, you may need to plan on having someone around to help. We always encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.
